5 Ways Tea Tree Oil Benefits Oily Skin

Tea tree oil is an oft-prescribed treatment to manage greasy, oily, acne-prone skin. The oil is extracted from the tree called Melaleuca Alternifolia, which grows in Australia. The essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the tea tree plant. The oil has a camphorous or menthol-like aroma and traditionally has been used to treat various skin issues. The oil is well-known for its skin soothing and balancing properties. It contains the phytochemical terpinen, the compound that calms skin and pinene a polyphenol that protects skin from oxidative damage.

According to leading aromatherapist and skin aesthetician Dr Blossom Kocchar, tea tree oil has antioxidants that prevent damage to the skin. This essential oil has many skin benefits like balancing excess sebum, preventing bacterial infection, toning the pores and restoring glow to the skin, she adds.

Here are Dr Kocchar’s pointers on the benefits of using tea tree oil for your skin:

#1: Balances your skin

Tea tree oil has astringent properties which help to control excess sebum secretion on the skin. Applying diluted tea tree oil as a toner on your skin after cleansing helps to clarify and normalise greasy, oily skin. Use a blend of tea tree oil and plain water as a toner and apply on your skin to keep it smooth and oil-free.

#2: Keeps acne flare-ups in check

Tea tree oil also helps to minimize pores, prevent clogged pores, and fight germs that can cause pimples and acne breakouts. Terpinen in the oil helps to keep pimple causing bacteria in check. So, using tea tree oil on the infected areas can help. Dab a drop of this oil on the pimples and acne-prone areas on your face. Do this twice a day to keep skin acne-free.

#3: Clears clogged pores

This oil can be used to keep your pores clean and toned as it has pinene, an antioxidant that helps to protect skin from damage and minimizes the appearance of pores. The oil also keeps excess sebum in check, so your pores do not get clogged with excess sebum. Take a few drops of this oil on a cotton pad and swipe on your face after cleansing to keep tighten pores.

#4: Soothes irritated skin

Tea tree oil has skin cooling and repairing properties, it helps to hydrate parched skin. It helps to restore skin’s natural moisture barrier and improve skin elasticity and suppleness. It can be used to calm skin irritation and redness caused by excessive sun exposure.

#6: Banishes body odour

Sweaty underarms can be a cause of embarrassment by giving rise to bad body odour. Sweat per se is not smelly, but when it gets mixed with the bacteria on our skin, it acquires a bad odour. Since it has a camphor like fresh smell, tea tree oil can be used to control bad BO. Dab few drops of this oil on areas where you tend to sweat, feel and smell fresh through the day.
